What You Need to Know About Drinking Wine

When you are a senior, things start to change and get interesting. You no longer drink the way you did in freshman or sophomore year. You do not go out every day of the week anymore and you actually recognize your lack of energy for going out.

Now, you just like to take naps, hang out with your friends for a while, stress over your future after graduation, and drink some wine. Wine … that is what we are here for.

In my opinion, wine is the alcoholic beverage specially designed for seniors. It would always help us to feel better; it doesn’t matter the situation.

For example, what do we do when we are done with midterms? We probably go out to feel free for once in the semester, but I assure you before going out we were pre-gaming at one of our friends’ places drinking wine and taking some shots.

What do we do when we had a hard day? We take a nap and try to relax by watching Netflix and drinking a glass of wine. We could be happy, sad, excited, angry, etc; wine would always be approved. Today, I bring you some of the coolest facts about wine and I bet you are going to love wine even more.

Make your own wine

Sometimes you don’t have the budget to buy a good bottle of wine and that is fine. We have all been there. If the bottle costs more than $12, then it is for rich people, and we are not rich; we are college students for God’s sake! Money is tight!

If you are a creative person and would like to try something different involving alcohol, why don’t you try to make your own wine? Ed McCarthy and Mary Ewing-Mulligan give us some advice in Wine for Dummies:

1. Pick a large quantity of ripe grapes.

2. Put the grapes into a clean container that doesn’t leak.

3. Crush the grapes to release their juice.

4. Add water and yeast.

5. Wait for the yeast to finish its work. The yeast produces bubbles, and when you don’t see them anymore you will have wine.

Drinking on a diet

Now, let’s go to drinking while on a diet. This is basically a nightmare. You are trying to lose some weight so you decided to stop drinking. We both know that does not work that well.

According to a study made by Obi Obadike from BodyBuilding.com, overweight people were assigned to one of two 1,500 calorie diets. The first group had to drink a glass of wine daily and the other group a glass of grape juice. The wine group lost 10.4 pounds and the grape juice group lost 8.3 pounds.

There is no reason for you to avoid wine anymore, but remember to be careful. You do not want to work out while drunk.

Health benefits

Wine is also great for boosting your body’s defenses and reducing the risks of infections, according to an article called 6 Reasons Why a Little Glass of Wine Each Day May Do You Good from the Health Magazine. Furthermore, the American Heart Association says that drinking wine increases the HDL (good cholesterol) by 20 percent. The higher the HDL levels, the lower the risks of heart diseases. Now, please do not take this information to get drunk just because it says it is good for your health. Quantity is also very important!

I found a hilarious article from the online magazine The Stir called 12 Reasons Why Wine is Better Than Men, written by Adriana Velez. She said, and I quote, “You can sample as many different wines as you’d like and no one will ever call you a slut” (a little dirty). There is one more benefit for us girls.

If you thought I did not have any benefits for the boys, you were so wrong. According to the Men’s Health magazine, an article called Will Red Wine Kill Your Workout? states that men that take supplements of resveratrol (which is an antioxidant found in red wine) reduce inflammation faster than men taking another kind of supplement. This antioxidant, Resveratrol, when is combined with radiation in cancer treatment, kills 65 percent of the malignant tumor cells, stated Catharine Paddock from Medical News Today.

Take into account that a glass a day would help not only our babes stay strong and relaxed after a workout but also those people who are unfortunately going through cancer treatment.

Now, you have relevant reasons to drink wine. You can either buy a good bottle of wine — not exceeding the $12 budget obviously — or you can try something new and make your own wine. You do not have to worry about not drinking when you are on a diet. As I already mentioned, a glass of wine every day would not affect your diet and it would actually provide some healthy benefits.

However, it is important to remember that everything in excess is harmful. You can drink wine every day of your life if you want to, just try to be thoughtful when it comes to how many glasses you are willing to drink.
