There are lots of ways to save money as a student in college — and it’s beneficial to do so as you then have more money to spend on other things, like renting furniture, which is a good use of funds in the long run.

Here are some ways you could be saving money.

1. Textbooks. You can save a lot of money by buying used textbooks for your classes rather than purchasing new books. Additionally, instead of buying books from your campus bookstore, look into different sites online to buy books as they’ll typically offer cheaper prices than local stores.

To save even more money, you should look into borrowing the books you need from the campus library as they may have the books you need and will allow you to use them for free. To make some money on textbooks, try selling last semester’s books to other students at the university.

2. Grocery shopping. Obviously, you’ve gotta eat, but you can still save money that you can then use towards renting furniture when you go grocery shopping. Instead of buying premium brands and fancy items, buy store-brand goods and purchase things that are on sale. Most stores will offer their own brand of items at a lesser cost than more recognizable brands and they’re typically pretty much the same when it comes to taste.

You can also cut out coupons and bring them with you when you’re shopping to save some more money on your purchases. When you do go shopping for groceries, head out with a list of what you need written down and try not to deviate from that list, giving yourself a little bit of flex room for one or two impulse buys as a treat.

3. Watch your bills. Whether it’s your credit card, bills, tuition payments, or something else, always try to pay before or by the due date so you can avoid late fees and thus save money. Paying on time will also make you manage your money that much better and be aware of how much things cost and what you’re spending.

Also, don’t take out more loans than you need to cover your college costs — some start accruing interest (at a remarkably high rate) right away and will result in you owing much more than you borrowed by the time you finish school, with you possibly even paying interest on your interest.

4. Limit luxuries. Getting delivery or going out to eat is way more expensive than going grocery shopping and cooking for yourself. Not only does the food cost more, but you have to either pay a delivery fee and tip or just a tip when you go out so try to limit the number of times you go out to eat each month and make them count.

Additionally, other luxuries like clothes shopping, movies, concerts, etc. can add up as well, so to save money, limit your clothing purchases to things you really need and attend the free movies and concerts your university offers.

5. Sell stuff you don’t use. You’re sure to have brought more clothes and stuff than you really need or use to college. So do yourself a favor and go through your stuff, from clothing and shoes to kitchenware and school supplies and post the excess stuff and items you don’t really like or use anymore on college Facebook groups for sale (or on Uloop’s For Sale page!).

Other students may want to buy the things you’re trying to get rid of and will appreciate not having to pay store prices or go to a store to buy them so it’s a win-win and will help you make some money to put towards renting furniture.

6. Vacations. Many students may head off for glamorous spring break vacations or winter break adventures but those can cost a lot of money since it’s known to be high season for college students — so the prices are often steep.

Instead of indulging in an expensive vacation, head home and spend time with family, take a road trip with friends, or sign up for an alternative break where you volunteer somewhere. These options are sure to be cheaper than going off on a fancy vacation and needing to pay for airline tickets, hotels, entertainment and more.

7. Off-campus living. Renting an apartment or house with some friends will allow you to split bills and costs — and in this case, you may want to think about taking on a few more roommates as the more the merrier, since then each of your portions of bills will be even smaller.

Additionally, living a bit further away from campus will probably be cheaper than renting an apartment or house just a block over as the landlord will likely charge higher rent since it’s a more convenient and better location. If possible, try to find an apartment or house that include some utilities in the rent so you’re not forced to pay rent, gas, water, electricity, and cable separately, since those will add up.

All in all, there are many different ways to save money as a student and that money can be put to good use by renting your furniture — this way, you don’t have to try to sell it at the end of the year or when you graduate.

So try implementing some of these methods of saving money and watch your bank account and wallet reap the rewards — as well as your apartment or house as you’ll be able to rent some awesome furniture.
